Election Day is November 5.
Our Mission
The Litchfield Democratic Town Committee promotes good government and democratic principles, encouraging citizens to become registered Democratic voters and supporting the most qualified Democrats to win elections.
Accomplishments at a Glance:
Democrats led the Board of Selectmen in the consistent reduction of taxes, saving taxpayers $1 million with a 1 mil decrease over the past four years. Fiscal responsibility, workplace analysis, technology upgrades, marketing and strategic planning alleviated the burden on taxpayers while we maintained and improved essential community services, Litchfield’s quality of life and investments in our future.
Democratic Selectmen applied close scrutiny to budgets and expenditures and with exemplary financial management, gained surpluses through decreased borrowing for capital improvements and keeping financial obligations manageable. This approach allowed our town to maintain a healthy general fund, reduce debt, fund crucial projects and address pressing infrastructure needs without burdening future generations.
Under Democratic leadership, the Board of Selectmen obtained substantial grants over four years: STEAP grants of over $600,000; $1,000,000 Small Cities Grant for Bantam Falls Senior Housing; $138,000 for EV Chargers; $225,000 for the Northfield Firehouse; $38,000 for the Municipal Bus benefiting seniors and the disabled. These grants bolstered Litchfield’s infrastructure improvements, enhanced public services and improved residents’ quality of life.
Recognizing the importance of effective communication and updated technology, the Democratic-led Board of Selectmen supported broadband access using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to empower Litchfield to thrive in the digital age, fostering greater participation and transparency. We now have Town of Litchfield Instagram and Facebook pages along with an improved website to keep residents informed. Zoom meetings and increased town meeting attendance have enhanced civic engagement. Town efficiency and convenience for residents and businesses were improved through online permits and credit card processing at our website. Cybersecurity measures were upgraded to safeguard Litchfield’s data and protect against digital threats.
ARPA funds were also invested in improvements to Town Beach, Community Field and Russell Street’s historic railroad building. ARPA, an economic stimulus act to speed up the nation’s recovery from the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, was passed by Congress in 2021. Yea votes in the US House were 220 Democrats to 0 Republicans; in the Senate, 50 Democrats to 0 Republicans voted yea.
Democratic leadership in sustainability was recognized and rewarded by Sustainable CT, with Litchfield achieving Bronze, Silver, and Climate Leader designations. Successful efforts include increased solar energy usage on municipal properties at no cost to the town while saving thousands of dollars annually in electricity costs; in-town EV charging stations; and implementing the Food Waste Diversion and Composting Program at Litchfield’s Recycling Center and in our schools. The results of our environmental stewardship are waste reduction, savings in trash disposal and electricity costs, reduction of our carbon footprint, and movement toward a more sustainable future.
Economic development was also strengthened. Democrats supported the transformation of historic buildings into economic drivers, such as the Belden House Bed and Breakfast and the Courthouse Boutique Hotel. The 28 Russell Street project, supported by Town-approved ARPA funds, revitalized a once dilapidated railroad building that now serves as a hub for non-profit environmental and housing groups. These endeavors have enhanced our town’s charm and fostered conservation, economic growth and community engagement.
Litchfield Democrats continued to dedicate ourselves to the well-being of our community by expanding social services through initiatives such as the food pantry, veterans programs, transportation services, and educational lunch and learn sessions. By completing our Affordable Housing Plan, the Board of Selectmen continues to address the diverse housing needs of our residents, ensuring Litchfield remains an inclusive and vibrant community for all. Expanded academic, agricultural, athletic and arts opportunities for students are expected with our recent Region 20 approval.
We vow to renew our commitment to this community. We are devoted to building upon our successes, tackling new challenges, and ensuring that Litchfield remains fiscally healthy, economically and environmentally sustainable, and continues to be a great place to live and work. Our Democratic leaders have the experience, vision and enthusiasm to continue to serve the community with responsibility and results.
